Although the first three centuries of Ottoman rule in the Arab Lands are not far removed from us in time, they remain a period which has been very little studied. Unlike other ''Dark Ages'' in history, their obscurity is by no means due to lack of materials for the scholar. Published or in manuscript, there are reasonably copious literary sources, particularly chronicles and biographical dictionaries, while the Ottoman period is distinguished from all those that preceded it in the Arab Near East by the great abundance of archival materials provided by the state records. Here, as rarely in the history of Islamic lands, detailed research with a corpus of administrative documents controlling and balancing literary works becomes possible.
Dr. Bakhit's study is an instance of this exploitation of the sources, and an exemplar of the information they can be made to yield. The range of his reading is impressive, and from it he has constructed a meticulous account of the administration of the province of Damascus in the sixteenth century, and has illuminated the relations between the Ottomans on the one hand and the great indigenous families and tribes on the other. Like all good historical research, his findings will serve as a corrective to stereotyped generalizations and as a stimulus to further investigations.
