لا يمكن ان يشك أحد اليوم بأهمية القضايا البيئة للأرض، وذلك نتيجة لخطورة الوضع ووصوله إلى درجة خطيرة أصبحنا نشعر بها جميعاً، مثل: الثقب الذي حدث في طبقة الأوزون، والتلوث بأنواعه المتعددة وأسبابه المتنوعة ومصادره المختلفة، من مائي وهوائي وغذائي وضوضائي من جهة، وانجثار الغابات والزحف الصحراوي من جهة أخرى، كما أنه توجد مشكلات عديدة تهدد المدن الصناعية وخاصة الكبرى منها، مشكلة "الأمطار الحمضية" التي يصفها علماء البيئة بأنها كارثة تسير ببطء وتدمر النباتات وتفسد الأنهار والبحيرات وما تحتويه من خيرات، كما تسبب تآكل المنشآت الحجرية والمعدنية، بالإضافة إلى الأنواع الأخرى للملوثات الكيميائية، التي أدت إلى تلوث البيئة (الماء والهواء والغذاء والتربة) وأثرت سلباً على صحة الإنسان.
ولذلك، فإنني حين أقدم هذا الكتاب فإني أرى أنه إضافة جديدة للمكتبة العربية لثراء وتعدد المادة العلمية به، فضلاً عن تعريف القارئ بأهم وأخطر الملوثات البيئية وهي الملوثات الكيميائية، وقد راعيت أن يكون هذا الكتاب حاوياً على أهم أنواع الملوثات الكيميائية وأشدها خطراً مع عرض المادة العلمية بأسلوب علمي ميسر، في صورة عناصر مسلسلة، حتى يسهل للقارئ فهم الكتاب وإدراك فحواه.
