إن المؤلف في تحميله أدبه التناقضات الإنسانية العميقة إنما قد عبر في حقيقة الأمر عن الثقافة الحديثة في مطلع القرن العشرين ماضياً إلى الحد الأقصى في انتقاد الأخلاق السائدة والعقل, وبأبطال شكاكين مضطربين وميالين إلى المعاناة الروحية الحادة. (الإنسان في حال استثنائية) ذلك ما كان يفتنه فهو لا يهتم بمن هو بطل قصصي قساً كان أو موظفاً, طيباً أو شريراً. إنما يهمه شيء واحد وهو أنه إنسان وبصفته كذلك كيف يتلقى متاعب الحياة, وقد عالج المؤلف أبطالاً كهؤلاء في مسرحياته العديدة أيضاً, ولكن اهتمامه لم يتوقف عند كتابة النص المسرحي فقد كانت له وجهة نظر محددة في كيفية عرضها. وكان من أهم ما تناوله الكتاب من قصص: العضاضة, حادثة, في المحطة, المدينة, القناع, العجوز, النزيل, واقعة من الحياة, تبليغ, الدنيء, وغيرها من القصص المفيدة.
