رواية عن صبيّ صغير يعيش زمنين مختلفين في آن واحد، فهو يحيا في مدينة أميركية في القرن العشرين لكنه في عالمه الجوانيّ "وهو عالم لا يقلّ حقيقية عن العالم الخارجيّ" يعيش قبل ملايين السنين، بالضبط في الفترة التي كان جنسنا فيها مرحلة انتقالية بين القرد والكائن البشريّ كما نعرفه اليوم.تندرج في هذه الرواية خبرات جاك لندن العميقة في معرفة الحيوان والإنسان معاً، ففي كثير من أعماله كان كاشفاً عن الحيوانيّ في الإنسان أو بالعكس عما هو إنسانيّ في الحيوان، كما تندرج فيها الكشوفات العلمية بدءاً من نظرية التطوّر الداروينية وانتهاء بكشوفات يونغ عما تكشفه الأحلام من تجارب موغلة في القدم.حياة أسلافنا من البشر ـ الحيوانات، يسردها بطل الرواية الصغير هنا على مستمعيه من دون أن يصدقه أحد. لكنّ من يقرأ الرواية لا يملك إلا أن يؤمن بأن وراء هذا السرد عبقرية وكشفاً عن كنز إنسانيّ ظلّ مطموراً لوقت طويل.
