وقد تمكن جاك لندن من خلق أقطاب أدبية مثالية، متمثلة بشخصيتين رئيستين متضادتين بشكل ملفت وهما: القبطان (وولف لارسن) وكل ما يمثله من تجسيد للرجولة بقوته وعدوانيته وذكائه المتّقد وفلسفته المادية البحتة و(همفري فان وايدن) ناقد أدبي في الثلاثينات من عمره،لم يرَ الجانب المظلم للحياة ولم يَخبر شظَف العيش، نظرته مثالية ورومانسية لكل شيء تقريباً، تتغير حياته حين تغرق السفينة التي يسافر على متنها في خليج سان فرانسيسكو، ويقضي عدة أشهر على متن سفينة صيد عجول البحر (الشبح).
ترك لنا جاك لندن أفكاره وفلسفته وعصارة تجربته في البحر ممزوجة بمغامرة مثيرة وصفها النُقّاد بأنها واحدة من أعظم قصص البحر التي كُتبت على الإطلاق، مزيج من الواقعية الجريئة والشاعرية السامية في تصويرها صراع الإنسان مع عناصر الطبيعة ومع نفسه؛ لتنتج عملاً يستحق القراءة بكل تأكيد.
