يتناول هذا الكتاب تطور الحركة العلمية في مدينة (كربلاء) المقدسة، ومراحل خفوتها وعودتها لبريقها من جديد وأسباب ذلك، كما يتناول الكتاب دور المدارس والجامعات والحوزات العلمية فيها في نشر العلوم العربية والإسلامية، يعرضها مؤلف دائرة المعارف الحسينية سماحة آية الله الشيخ محمد صادق محمد الكرباسي في هذا الجزء من أجزاء موسوعته، وهو الجزء الثالث من باب أضواء على مدينة الحسين، لكنه متخصص بـ (الحركة العلمية في كربلاء)، ويستكمل المؤلف عرضه بإيراد نبذة مفصلة ووافية لأعلام تلك المدينة وعلمائها الأفاضل، وما قدموه من عطاء علمي وفقهي وفكري، على اعتبار أنه تراثاً فكرياً متواصلاً يستفاد منه حتى يومنا هذا.
وعليه، ضم هذا الكتاب أسماء كل من له ارتباط بالمجال الحوزوي من الفقهاء والأصوليين وأهل الدراية والرجال، رتبت أسماءهم بحسب الترتيب الألفبائي، نذكر منهم: آسية بنت أحمد المقدسية (1193- 1266م) ، "آغا بيكم بنت محمد علي الطبائية (1823- 1905م) ، آغا حسن بن كلب حسين الكهنوي (1865- 1929م) ، (...) وآخرون بلغوا (96) عالماً آخرهم في الكتاب "أبو القاسم بن ... النوري" (1824- 1892م).
