إن ديننا دينُ خلقٍ رفيع، دعا إلى التحلّي بالفضائل والتخلي عن الرذائل، وحضّ على مكارم الأخلاق، وحميد الصفات، ومحاسن الشِيَم، وقد بيّن رسولنا صلى الله عليه وسلم الغاية من بعثته فقال: "إنّما بُعِثْتُ لأُتمم صالحَ الأخلاقِ".
فالأخلاق الفاضلة والصفات الحميدة هي قواعد الدينَ وأصوله الثابتة.
وهذا الكتاب قبس من مشكاة النبوة التي أضاء نورها العالمين أُقدِّمه لأول مرة بعد أن ظلَّ حبيساً قروناً كثيرة والمسلمون في أشدِّ الحاجة إلى مثل هذه الأخلاق الرفيعة التي دعا إليها القرآن الكريم وحثّت عليها السنّة المطهرة وكان عليها سلفنا الأول.
ويُعَدُّ هذا الكتاب من المصادر الهامة التي اعتمدها العلماء في تآليفهم كإبن أبي الدنيا في كتبه، والمزي في تهذب الكمال والذهبي في سير أعلام النبلاء، كما أن هذا الكتاب أول كتاب يظهر للإمام البُرْجلاني.
