ليس ثمّة شك في أنّ مفهوم الجميل Le beau ومعناه كان قد شغل الفلاسفة وآثار إهتماماتهم منذ القدم، بداية من أفلاطون وصولاً إلى العديد من الفلاسفة المعاصرين من أمثال هانزغادمير وجيل دولوز ولوك فيري، مروراً بكبار الفلاسفة الذين كان لهم باعٌ طويل وإسهام في الحقل الجمالي كأبي نصر الفارابي وأبي حامد الغزالي ودافيد هيوم وإيمانويل كانط وفريدريش شيلر وكارل فيلهلم سولغر وفريدريش هيغل، وغيرهم من الفلاسفة الذين طالما اهتموا بفكرة الجميل وكتبوا أشياء كثيرة متعلقة بهذا الموضوع الذي يُعّد - كما هو معلوم - من أهم موضوعات الجماليات ومباحث فلسفة الفن، ولعلنا لا نجائب الصواب إذا قلنا إنّ موضوع الجميل يعتبر أهم مبحث دارت حوله الجماليات وفلسفة الفن وموضع إهتمام الفلاسفة الذين تباينت آراؤهم ومواقفهم فيما يخص طبيعته وماهيته وحقيقته لأنه - والحقُ يقال - من أشد المفاهيم تعقيداً من وجهة النظر الفلسفية.
لذلك، تعددت معاني ودلالات الجميل في الحقل الفلسفي بإختلاف الإتجاهات الفلسفية وتباين آراء فلاسفة الجمال الذين طرحوا العديد من الإشكاليات، ويمكن أن نذكر منها على وجه الخصوص ما طبيعة الجميل؟ ما المعايير التي يمكن أن تستند إليها في حكمنا على الأشياء الجميلة التي نراها في الطبيعة أو في الأعمال الفنية، كما يحدث عندما نقول إنّ هذه الزهرة جميلة وهذا المنظر الطبيعي جميل وهذه اللوحة الفنية جميلة وهذه السيمفونية جميلة؟ وهل الجميل ذاتي أم موضوعي؟ وهل يعد الجميل قيمة نسبية أم مطلقة؟...
وقد بذل هؤلاء الفلاسفة - كما هو معلوم - جهوداً كبيرة في محاولة حل هذه الإشكاليات أو على الاقل في إلقاء بعض الضوء عليها قصد الولوج إلى معنى الجميل.
