إن ما كتبه الأب فينيكان في "أفلاطون" هو، بوجه من الوجوه، مدخل إلى حالة الفلسفة ووضعيتها قبل مؤسس الأكاديمية، وكذلك إلى حياته وعلاقته بسقراط وآثاره الفلسفية ومذهبه في النفس ونظرية المشالات والدين والسياسة والدولة ومنهجه الفلسفي. فهو يعرض لمختلف آثار أفلاطون، الأولى منها التي كتبها لتوضيح مذهب معلمه سقراط، وهي تبحث في الفضيلة على اختلاف أنواعها ومظاهرها، والأخرى المحاورات الميتافيزيقية، حيث دقق أفلاطون في قضية المعرفة، وخصوصاً في "مشكلة الحكم، بقصد الحدّ، في أن واحد، من أطروحة هيراقليتس الجذرية القائلة بطغيان فيض الأشياء الكلي، ومن أطروحة بَرمينذس التي تجمد الوجود في سكون عقيم.
فالمؤلف، الأب فينيكان، يوجز كل محاورة من محاورات صاحب الأكاديمية، فيحدد الموضوع الذي تتطرق إلهي المحاورة، ثم يتناول ببعض التفصيل المشكلة التي تسعى المحاورة إلى حلحلتها. وإذا كان هدف الأب فينيكان هو عرض ما ألفه أفلاطون، بإيجاز وموضوعية، وهو العارف بمجمل آثار أفلاطون وتفاصيلها، فهو يتطرق في مرحلة لاحقة إلى مذهب أفلاطون الفلسفي، وذلك في المحاورات الأولى ومن خلال التفكير الأفلاطوني في المواضيع والقضايا الشائكة الوجودية: النفس، المثالات، الدين والدولة والسياسة.
وبالإجمال فإن كتاب أفلاطون هذا يمثل قراءة موضوعية لمجمل الفكر الأفلاطوني وتفسير مبسط لما صعب منه وغمض، وهو قراءة هادئة للنصوص الأفلاطونية تضع بين يدي القارئ الأدوات المناسبة للولوج إلى فهم ديناميّة فكر فلسفي يسعى إلى رؤية الواقع كما هو، على تناقضاته وكثرته، ووحدته وانسجامه.
