هذا الكتاب يحاول ان يعالج بعض القضايا النظرية ، وهى صياغة المفاهيم الخاصة المرتبطة بمشكلة البقاء وعمليات التكيف الإنساني وذلك من خلال دراسة الحياة الشعبية في منطقة جنوب البحر الأحمر في منطقة مثلث حلايب الذي يقع في أقصى جنوب شرق مصر على الحدود المصرية السودانية. فقد تعرضت الثقافة الشعبية في هذه المنطقة لتأثيرات عميقة أدت إلى اختلال التوزان الطبيعي القائم بين الأفراد والبيئة. فالنظم الاجتماعية والثقافية تعتبر ميكانزمات وظيفية تكيفية تسمح للإنسان باستغلال موارد البيئة دون تخط لقدرتها على توفير الغذاء، فالبيئة الطبيعية في هذه المنطقة تتميز بتضاريها الوعرة وامطار غير دائمة مع فترات جفاف طويلة وموارد محدودة لذلك قامت عمليات التكيف الإنساني على الرعي رغم وجود نشاطات اقتصادية اخرى مثل التجارة والصيد وهكذا تشكل قيادة القطعان بحثا عن المرعى والماء في موسم المطر اسس الطريقة التقليدية للحياة في تلك المنطقة.
