Cette étude tente d’analyser les stratégies narratives d’un manuscrit de conteur de la recension damascène de Sīrat al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Baybarṣ, et d’en déterminer les spécificités. En effet, si le genre sīra peut, comme tout récit, se ramener à une grammaire que partage l’ensemble des siyar, chaque recension peut également proposer des stratégies narratives qui lui sont propres. Au-delà des invariants, ce sont donc les variants et leur utilisation particulière qui constituent la spécificité de la recension de Damas. Des concepts fondamentaux du genre, comme la structure par épisodes, la répétition, le style formulaire, le double et la substitution sont mis en œuvre dans des stratégies spécifiques qui dépendent de choix essentiels dans le récit, comme, par exemple, un dévoilement permanent qui ne laisse que peu de place au suspense. L’annexe comprend un résumé en français de l’intégralité de la Sīra, ainsi que plusieurs listes de personnages et un ensemble de données permettant au lecteur de replacer dans leur contexte les épisodes étudiés.
Francis Guinle, professeur émérite de l’Université Lumière-Lyon 2, est spécialiste de Shakespeare et du théâtre élisabéthain. En tant qu’arabisant, il est titulaire d’un doctorat en langue et littérature arabes, et travaille sur la littérature populaire ainsi que sur le théâtre arabe. Il a traduit la pièce de Ramzi Choukair, Al-Zīr Sālim et le Prince Hamlet (en 2004), et a participé en tant qu’assistant à la mise en scène des représentations données en arabe et en français, en Syrie et en France.
