عرفت شعوب الشرق الأساطير منذ القدم وكانت الأساطير الهندوسية من بين تلك الأساطير التي ما زالت تعيش حية بين الناس، ورغم أنها دوّنت باللغة السنسكريتية إلا أن العديد من العلماء انبرى لترجمتها إلى الإنكليزية كي تصبح ميسرة للقراء، وتعد "رامايانا" من أقدم وأروع الملاحم الهندية نظراً لكونها تعتمد على إرث حضاري عريق ومعتقدات دينية متنوعة. تكونت الرامايانا عبر قرون طويلة، إلا أنها صيغت صياغة نهائية من قبل الشاعر فالميكي الذي نظمها في نحو أربعة وعشرين ألف مقطع (دوبيت) في اللغة السنسكريتية فهو أول شاعر ملحمي في تاريخ الهند. تدور أحداث الرامايانا في مملكة كوسالا القديمة شمال شرقي الهند حيث كانت تزدهر حضارة عريقة منذ آلاف السنين، وهي تصف الأهوال والمخاطر التي عاشها راما بعد نفيه من موطنه والحرب التي خاضها من أجل استعادة زوجته سيتا التي اختطفها الشيطان رافانا، ولذلك فهي شبيهة بملحمة الأوديسا الإغريقية. وللملحمة تأثير كبير لا محدود على الواقع الحيّ في المجتمع الهندي الحديث فيعدون أبطالها قمة المثال وتعد سيتا زوجة راما مثال المرأة المخلصة التي تحاول المرأة الهندية الاقتداء بها، وأصبحت العلاقة الزوجية بين راما وسيتا نموذجاً ومثالاً يحاولون تقليده. كما تقتبس المهرجانات الدينية أحداث الملحمة لتقدم مشاهدها في احتفالات سنوية تقام في أرجاء الهند، ولا يزال إنشادها طقساً هاماً في الاحتفالات الدينية التي تقام في مدينة بنارس كل عام.
