يصف هذا العمل، الذي تتخلله دراما نفسية، ومؤمرات وإحتيالات دينية، حياة هؤلاء الأرستقراطيين الريفيين الذين يرثون قرية بكاملها ومن ثم يمتلكون "النفوس" التي تتألف منها.
نجد هناك الأشخاص العابرين، الطفيليين، خدم المنزل، الأسرة، الأم المستبدة، والمدعي الثقافة والزائف الحماس الديني، الذي يسيطر شيئاً فشيئاً على هؤلاء الأشخاص ويكشف لنا أنانية وظلم ووصولية مجتمع اللامساواة والمظاهر الكاذبة التي كان عليها المجتمع الروسي إبان القرن التاسع عشر.
إنه نص حكائي ذكيّ، مُتقَن، ذو حبكة مدهشة، يتّسم بوصف دقيق ولمّاح للطبيعة البشرية؛ هذا الوصف الذي ميّز وخلّد أعمال هذا الكتاب العظيم التي ما زالت تُقرأ وتُقرأ إلى يومنا هذا.
