اتجهت الدراسات التاريخية في الآونة الأخيرة إلى دراسة تاريخ أقاليم الخلافة الشرقية، سواء كان ذلك على مستوى التاريخ السياسي أو الحضاري، ونتج عن ذلك عدد من الدراسات المهمة، كان لها عظيم الأثر في إلقاء الضوء على تاريخ هذا الجناح المهم من دار الإسلام.
وبرغم تلك الجهود فإن بلاد المشرق بحاجة إلى مزيد من الدراسات الرصينة؛ للكشف عن جوانب تاريخها؛ السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والفكرية والعلمية، ويبدو أن الجوانب الفكرية والعلمية، تعد الأهم والأجدر بالبحث والإهتمام؛ لأن فكر الأمة وعلومها من أعظم جوانب مجدها خطراً، وأبقاها أثراً، فهو يمثل وجدانها وتجربتها عبر التاريخ في أنحاء شتى من المعرفة الإنسانية، وآية ذلك أن الفكر هو الركيزة الأساسية التي تقدم الغذاء الأصيل للنفس الإسلامية المتوثبة والمنطلقة نحو إيجاد مكانتها ووجدانها في الفكر العالمي المزدحم بأطر متنوعة من القيم والحضارات.
وإذا كان التاريخ يعد شعاعاً من الماضي ينير للإنسانية حاضرها، ومستقبلها، ويعطيها الثقة في نفسها، لتسير قدماً في طريق الرقى والتقدم، فإن الحضارة الإسلامية منحة من الله جل شأنه لبني البشر، حملها المسلمون إليهم، وكان لأبناء إقليم سجستان جهد موفور في هذا المجال، إذ كان إقليم سجستان - خلال القرون الأربعة الأولى من الهجرة - موطناً لتيارات فكرية ومذهبية مختلفة، لكل واحد منها علماؤه، وآراؤه، ومعتقداته، كانت تلقى دعماً من بعض القوى السياسية، إن لم تكن تتبنّاها، وتؤمن بفكرها، وتعمل جاهدة على نشرها، فقد كان هناك حضور كبير لفرقة الخوارج، حتى قيل "إن سجتان كعبة خوارج المشرق" وبهذه البلاد نشأت فرقة الكرّامية المجسمة وترعرعت، قبل إنتشارها في أقاليم المشرق الإسلامي الأخرى، كما سادت في إقليم سجستان المذاهب الفقهية السنية ولا سيما المذهبين الحنفي والشافعي، وبعض مذاهب الشيعة كالجعفرية والإسماعيلية، ودراسة هذه الفرق والمذاهب مهم جداً؛ لبيان أثرها في تطور الفكر الإسلامي في هذه البلاد خاصة، والبلاد إسلامية عامة.
إن هذه الدراسة تبرز جوانب العطاء الفكري والعلمي لأبناء إقليم سجستان في مجال العلوم والمعارف المختلفة، من قراءات وتفسير، وحديث، وفقه، وعقيدة، وتاريخ، ولغة، ونحو، وأدب، وطب، ورياضيات، وفلك، وفلسفة. كما أنها تعرض المُثل العليا التي ظهرت في حياة علماء هذه الأمة؛ ليكون مجال الإقتداء بهم عبر التاريخ مفتوحاً، ولبيان كرامة العلم والعلماء ومنزلتهم، وتثبيت قلوب السالكين لهذا الطريق، فلعل هذه الدراسة تحقق بعضاً من هذه المعاني السامية.
