لقد بدأت في تجميع المادة العلمية للكتاب منذ عام 1970. ومنذ ذلك العام وأنا أبذل جهدًا مستمرًا في تنميتها وتنقيحها. وبالرغم من هذا ظل هناك نقص وقصور في بعض الموضوعات لم يمكن تلافيه وأحد الأسباب وراء ذلك تمثل في عدم التعرض إلى تطور منهج التحليل الاقتصادي خلال القرون الماضية وعرض بعض المساهمات الهامة التي تجلت في القرن الماضي (العشرين).
وخلال الفترة التالية تم تنقيح الكتاب المذكور عدة مرات وصولًا إلى طبعته الخامسة، وكان ذلك انطلاقًا من هدفي في استكمال المادة العلمية وفي تقديم كل ما يمكن أن يفيد في تطور النظرية الاقتصادية الملائمة لظروف البلدان النامية عمومًا، والإسلامية بصفة خاصة. وقد أقدمت منذ خروج الطبعة الثانية من المؤلف المذكور على عرض الفكر الاقتصادي الإسلامي في فترة العصور الوسطى. وكانت هذه في حد ذاتها إضافة كبيرة وهامة حيث أهملت معظم مؤلفات الفكر الاقتصادي سواء ما نشر منها بالعربية أو بلغات أجنبية هذا الفكر المميز الذ كانت له الريادة في العالم فكريًا وتطبيقيًا طوال فترة لم تقل عن ثماني قرون امتدت من القرن الثامن إلى القرن السادس عشر.
