عرّوني، وألقوني على بطني على الأرض، كان الناس قد احتشدوا، وراح بعضهم يقول: "أضربوا الأفغاني!"، وراح آخرون يجهرون بالصلوات، حين هبطت أول جلدة سوط على ظهري، شعرت أنني ارتفعت مائة متر عن الأرض، ووقعت على ظهري مرة أخرى سكاكين حادة، لقد مزق ألم الجلدة جسدي، ومزق روحي خنجر الصيحات المهينة.
تمالكت نفسي؛ وبمجرد ما انتهت الأربعون جلدة، انقضت أربعون سنة من عمري أيضاً، كان ألم الإهانة معذباً أكثر من ألم السوط، تلقيت أربعين جلدة سوط مبرحة لدرجة أني غبت عن الوعي تقريباً، حينما كنت أتلقى كل ضربة، أتصور أن نصل سيف يخترم نخاع عظامي.
