This book is a vivid evocation of life in a palestinian village more than 50 yers ago. The 226 pictures, most of which ard published here for the first time, have been selected feom a unique collection of over 1000 photographs taken by the finnish anthroplogist hilma granqvist. The photographs were taken during a period of three years in the 1920's while Dr granqvist was conducting research in the little muslim village od artas near bethlehem. Her pictures provide an unusually intimate portrait of a palestinian village at one moment in history. The wide range of subjects covered by the photographs together with karen seger's informative text and captions, based on Dr granqvist's books and manuscripts, make portrait of a palestinian village a valuable record of a neglected aspect of palestinian culture.
Hilma granqvist (1890-1972) was a finn of swedish extraction, and obtained a doctorate from the abo akademi in finland for her work in artas. Dr granqvist was the first scholar to live for such a prolonged period in one palestinian village and become so intimately aquainted with the people and their way of life. No comparable work has been done since. Her research focused on the cistoms and traditions associated with childbirth child-rearing, marriage and death. She wrote five books on these subjects but published only 27 of her photographs.
Karen seger, who has selected and compiled this collection of photographs, is an anthropologist and archaeologist with over 10 years' experience of living and working in the palestine area. The vatue of the granqvist photographs is greatly increased by the fact that they are well documented in her books and unpublished manuscripts. Ms seger has drawn closely on this information in her explanatory text and captions.
