شكل إزرا باوند علامة فارقة في الأدب العالمي وفي الشعر على وجه الخصوص إذ يعتبر بحق مؤسساً لحركة التجديد في الشعر إذ افتتح في ديوانه (ريبو ستس) 1912 لمرحلة التصويرية، تلك الحركة التي ظهرت ملامحها واضحة في هذا الديوان وبدت لغته متحررة من الأسلوب القديم. وقد تميزت هذه الحركة بتعاملها المباشر مع الموضوع ونفورها من استعمال كلمة، كما تضيف شيئاً للعرض الفتي. لكن باوند سرعان ما يعلن القطيعة من التصورية ليؤسس حركة سميت بالفورتيسه (vortex) أو الدوامة بالاشتراك مع زميله ويندهام لويس في عام 1914.
لقد تميز باوند بتشاؤمه العميق ويبدو ذلك واضحاً في العديد من القصائد التي تحتويها دواوينه. وهذا ما تبرزه هذه الدراسة وتحث القارئ على المتابعة حتى النهاية. لقد رد المؤلف حالة القلق التي وسمت حياة باوند إلى سمات خاصة دفعته إلى التحرر من جاذبية المكان، ومن هنا كانت لندن وباريس وراياللو محطات في رحلته الطويلة.
ولقد وجد إزار باوند مآله في الشرق حيث اكتشف أن كونفوسيشوس يقدم بعض الوصفات البسيطة لحياة إنسان شريف. ووجد فيه رفض كل ما يتعلق بالأخرويات واللامبالاة القصوى حيال نهاية الأزمان، وحيال مشكلة الشر والخلود. إن محور الحكمة الذي وجده باوند في كونفوسيشوس رسالة تريد تسجيل نوع من سعادة الوجود في العالم والتعبير عن نوع الفرح الهادئ.
