رجل أعرج يشق زحام الطريق بساقه الصناعية، ليلة إعلان الجلاء، وفى حركته حياء، ربما من عاهته.. وربما من ملابسه الزرية: سترة من الكاكى ذهب أكثر أزرارها الصفراء، وبنطلون ضربته الشمس حتى امتقع، وغاض لونه، وانكمش قماشه، وشال عن الأرض شبراً. وكان وجهه لايقل قدماً عن ثيابه، سقطت عليه شمس القاهرة ستين سنة، ولكن نحاسه لم يكن صافياً.. فإن سنيه كانت عجافاً، وكان جلده مشدوداً على هزال، ولحم قليل، وأسى كثير. ولكن عينيه كانت فيهما كبرياء.
هل من حق إبراهيم أن تكون له كبرياء تقيم فى عينيه وتزاحم حياءه؟!.. إنه شيخ تافه يقوم بعمل تافه.. محولجى فى ترام القاهرة، يقف على الطريق فى ملتقى الخطوط، وفى يمينه قطعة ثقيلة من الحديد يعملها فى القضبان لكى يعطى الترام اتجاهه، وفى يساره قطعة أخرى من الحديد على شكل قرص إذا اعترض السائق وجهه الأحمر وقف، وإذا لوح له بالوجه الآخر الأخضر كان ذلك إذناً له بالمسير وكانت تنهمر فوق رأس إبراهيم سباب السائقين كلما أبطأ فى الحركة، وفى الصيف قلما يجد لحظات يمسح فيها عرقه.. وفى الشتاء لم يكونوا يمهلونه حتى يبصق من صدره سعال الربو، ويعرضون به فى غلظة: "تحرك يا أعرج".. وكأنما ارتطام قدمه الصناعية بالأرض الصلبة لا يكفى لتذكيره بأنه أعرج. وكان إبراهيم يوماً ما سائق ترام مثلهم، ولشد ما يشعره هذا التعبير بالضعة والهوان.. ولكن قلبه كان يتمرد عليه ويتحداه ويصيح به: "أنا لست وضيعاً".. كان قلبه كبيراً ومليئاً وكان هو الذى يرسل إلى عينيه كبرياء.
