في ديوانه الشعري "تحت الرماد" يكشف الشاعر اللبناني إلياس حبشي عن موقفه من العالم والوجود، بكثير من الرفض والثورة وقد تجسدت هذه الرؤية المتسامية في تحميس الذات وتحميس الآخر، فهو الشاعر الذي لا يمكن له أن يتقبل أمراً لا يتوافق مع مبادئه وأفكاره ونظريته في الحياة، ويظهر ذلك في أكثر من مقام في شعره وأكثر من غرض وفي جلّ مراحل تجربته الشعرية العريقة.
في القصيدة التي يفتتح بها الديوان "السيف رمز الشرف" نقرأ للشاعر: "سيف الشهامات، يا للروع، ينثلمُ/وبت أخشى على ذا السيف ينحطم، مدى عصورٍ وأجيالٍ سمت خلقاً/فيها تقدست الأخلاق والقيم، ما استعملوا السيف إلا لافتدا وطنٍ/والذود عن شرفٍ يغلوكما الذممُ!"
وبهذا فإن إلياس الإنسان وإلياس الشاعر يتقاسما لذة الشهامة والشموخ، فالحماسة تبدو أكثر من مجرد حالة وإنما هو موقف وقرار ومسؤوليةن بل هي سمة قارة أساسية، إذا انتفت انتفى معها معنى الوجود عند الشاعر.
يضم الكتاب قصائد متنوعة الأغراض والثيمات الشعرية توزعت على بحور الشعر الموزون والمقفى بالإضافة إلى شهادات أصدقاء الشاعر ونقاد وشعراء في شعر حبشي.
