يركز تحليل الخطاب على بنية اللغة المنطوقة بها بصورة طبيعية، من مثل ما يوجد في "خطابات" مثل المحادثات، والحوارات، والتعليقات والخطب.
ويركز تحليل النص على بنية اللغة المكتوبة، من مثل ما يوجد في "نصوص" مثل المقالات، والملاحظات، علامات السير والفصول.
على أن هذا التمييز ليس واضح المعالم، ولقد كان ثمة العديد من الإستعمالات لهذه الألقاب، بشكل خاص، بالوسع إستعمال "الخطاب" و"النص" بمعنى أكثر إتساعاً ليتضمن جميع وحدات اللغة بوظيفة تواصلية محددة، سواء المنطوقة أو المكتوبة، فبعض الباحثين يتحدثون عن "الخطاب المنطوق أو المكتوب"، فيما يتحدث آخرون عن "النص المكتوب أو المنطوق" (كريسل، 116: 1987: التشديد في النص الأصلي).
مثل أي مصطلح آخر، الخطاب يحدده أيضاً بشكل كبير ما هو ليس كذلك، ما يتحدد في تعارض مع؛ هكذا غالباً ما يتميز الخطاب بواسطة إختلافه عن سلسلة من المصطلحات، مثل النص، والجملة، والأيديولوجيا.
كل واحد من هذه المصطلحات يرسم حدود معنى الخطاب، على سبيل المثال، يبرهن جيوفري ليتش ومايكل شورت بأن: الخطاب هو تواصل لساني ينظر إليه كصفقة بين المتكلم والمستمع، بما هو نشاط بينشخصي يحدد شكله هدفُه الإجتماعي.
إن النص تواصل لساني (سواء منطوق أو مكتوب) يُنظر إليه ببساطة كرسالة مشفرة من خلال أدائها السمعية او المرئية. - (أورده هاوثورن، 189: 1992).
