مصطلح " خطاب : بات مصطلحاً شائعاً فى عديد من أفرع المعرفة منها النظرية النقدية وعلم الاجتماع وعلم اللغة والفلسفة وعلم النفس الاجتماعى وغير ذلك حتى أنه أصبح يُترك بدون تعريف ، كأنه أصبح من المسلمات . وهو يرد بكثره فى تحليل النصوص الادبية وغير الادبية ، ويكثر تداوله فى الإشاره إلى نوع من التعقيد النظرى بصور عويصه ومبهمه أحياناً . وربما كان النطاق الأوسع من الدلالات الممكنة بين مصطلحات النظرية الأدبية والثقافية . ومع ذلك فهو المصطلح الأقل تحديداً فى النصوص النظرية . ومن ثم فلابد من اتباع السبل التى نسعى بها للخروج بمعنى للمصطلح. والطريقة الأوضح لتقصى دائرة معانيه البحث فى معجم . ولكن يبدو أن المعانى الأعم للمصطلح ودلالاته النظرية تداخلت والتبست ، ذلك أن المعانى النظرية تكسوها دائماً طبقة من معانٍ أعم . ويتباين تاريخ تطور الاستخدام العام للمصطلح ، فحتى إذا اتبعنا الطريق الأبسط فى تاريخه نرى تحولاً من التركيز على جانب واحد من استعمالاته إلى غيره.
