ظلّ فيتزجيرالد حتى آخر حياته يشعر بالحيرة من الفشل النسبي الذي أصابَ رواية (.. والليل رقيق)، بعد السنوات الطِوال التي بدّدها في تأليفها وجهوده التي بذلها لجعلها أفضل رواية أميركية في عصره.
كان قد بدأها أثناء إقامته في الريفييرا في أواخر صيف عام 1925 . أولاً عملَ في فتراتٍ من الحماس الشديد، ومن ثم وضع المخطوط جانباً على مدى أشهر طويلة في وقتٍ كان يكتب خلاله قصصه القصيرة المُربحة لمصلحة ساترداي إيفننغ بوست؛ ولكن في أوائل عام 1932 عثر على تصميم أكثر طموحاً لها، وكان غارقاً في الدَين، مما دفعه إلى العمل فيها بمثابرة حتى انتهى من كتابة الفصول الأخيرة، وأجرى آخر المحذوفات على التجارب المطبعية.
وشاهدها تنمو من مجرد رواية درامية قصيرة مثل غاتسبي العظيم، إلى رواية فلسفية أو نفسية طويلة على طراز سوق التفاهة، ومن ثم، وبينما هو يحذف مشهداً بعد آخر، راقبها تتقلَّص من جديد لتغدو رواية متوسطة الحجم، لكنه كان متأكّداً من أنَّ نبرة الرواية الأكثر طولاً ما تزال موجودة فيها. وانقضت تسع سنوات من حياته في الكتابة وفي القصة نفسها.
وعند القراءة المتأنّية يجد المرء فيها إبهار صيفه الأول الذي أمضاه في كاب دانتيب – لأنه يستطيع أنْ يتصوَّر نفسه روزميري هويت في الرواية، إلى جانب لعب دور ديك دايفر؛ ثم مشاعره بشأن المال والمستويات المختلفة للمجتمع الأميركي: ثم صراعه مع إدمان الكحول وهواجسه حول كونه أصبح مُفلِساً في انفعالاته؛ ثم مرض زوجته وكل ما علِمه من الأطباء السويسريين والأميركيين الذين شخّصوا حالتها؛ ثم الحِكمة المريرة التي اكتسبها من التجربة ولم يتمكن من إعادتها إليها، بل إلى قصصه القصيرة فقط؛ ثم أيضاً أشياء أشدّ سواداً، إحساسه بالذنب، وخوفه من الكارثة التي تحولتْ إلى توقٍ إلى الكارثة - كل هذا موجود في الكتاب، بمستويات متنوعة، كمدن طروادة التسع المدفونة.
