إن الوسطية من أعظم خصائص هذه الأمة ومن أبرز صفاتها، ولهذا اقتصر الله عليها في وصف هذه الأمة فقال تعالى في محكم كتابه: ﴿وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطاً لِتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيداً﴾... (سورة البقرة: آية 143).
وكان من لوازم ذلك أن تكون الشريعة التي تحتكم إليها هذه الأمة في تيسير كافة شؤونها شريعة وسطاً لا إفراط فيها ولا تفريط، سواء أكان ذلك في مجال علاقة المرء بخالقه، أو صلة الإنسان بالكون والحياة، أو إرتباط الفرد بالمجتمع، أو علاقة الأمة بغيرها من الأمم إلى غير ذلك من سائر الشؤون.
وقد تجلى ذلك بوضوح في كافة أحكامها الكلية ومبادئها العامة فجاءت - كما يقول الإمام الشاطبي - "جارية في التكليف بمقتضاها على الطريق الوسط الأعدل، الآخذ من الطرفين بقسط لا ميل فيه، الداخل تحت كسب العبد من غير مشقة عليه ولا إنحلال، بل هو تكليف جار على موازنة تقتضي في جميع المكلفين غاية الإعتدال، كتكاليف الصلاة، والصيام، والحج، والجهاد، والزكاة، وغير ذلك...".
