يعتبر كتاب الحرية من أهم النصوص التي كُتبت في الفلسفة السياسية، وفيه يعرّف جون ستيورات ميل الحرية معتبراً أنها تحرر من تدخل سلطة الدولة أو الأحكام الأخلاقية السائدة وقوة أساسية في التطور الإجتماعي ورفاه الأفراد.
ويبرر حق الفرد في هذه الحرية من خلال التركيز على الدور الذي يقوم به تطوير الذات في رفاه البشر جميعاً، وتتسع رؤيته لتشمل حرية الفكر والمشاعر وحرية التفاعل بين الأفراد، وواجب المجتمع في حماية تطور مفهوم الفردية كسبيل لتطور المجتمع وتجديده.
هذا الكتاب الذي طُبع عام 1859 لا يزال يُعاد طبعه بإستمرار، كما أن المبادئ التي أقرّها ميل منذ ما يقارب 150 عاماً لا تزال فاعلة في النقاش السياسي العام إلى يومنا هذا.
جون ستيورات ميل 1806- 1873، كان بمثابة الطفل المعجزة، فقد تعلَّم اللغة اليونانية وهو في الثالثة واللاتينية وهو في الثامنة، درس الإقتصاد السياسي، وانتُخب عضواً في البرلمان عن الحزب الليبرالي، وكان من أوائل المطالبين بحق التصويت للنساء، والمدافعين عن قوانين الإصلاحات الإجتماعية.
