يعد ماركس من الفلاسفة الذين أرّقتهم إشكالية الإنسان وتاريخ تطوره وعلاقته مع نفسه ومع الطبيعة، وقد طرح أسئلته الماهوية المتعلقة بصيروة الإنسان المرتبطة عضوياً بإشكالية التاريخ الإنساني عبر تقصّيه النقدي لمسارات التقدم والتخلف في المجتمعات البشرية، فالإنسان هو نتاج التاريخ؛ إنه يطوّر ذاته في الوقت الذي يَصنع فيه التاريخَ ويُصنع به، ويعيد تشكيل نفسه بإستمرار، إذ إنه يستخدم قواه لتغيير العالم.
إن رحلة الإنسان المعقدة والمستمرة الغنية بالإنفعالات والصَّبوات والأسئلة الأزلية الأبدية تعبّر عن مدى طموحه لمعرفة كل شيء والسيطرة على كل شيء بما في ذلك الكون والطبيعة والحياة، عبر فهم قوانينها واستحواذها من أجل تحقيق حريته.
إنه يختزن في داخله على الدوام أكثر بكثير مما يعرف، وما يمكن أن يعرف عن نفسه، وإن ذاته تنطوي على هواجس المعرفة والبحث، لأنه ليس وجوداً فحسب، بل هو وعيٌ بهذا الوجود وتساؤل عن معناه.
