الأساس الاول: ويتمثل في إصدار الصوت وإنتاجه ، ويوقم علىدراسته علم الأصوات النطقى، أو ما يطلق عليه (علم الأصوات الفسيولوجي).
الأساس الثاني: ويتمثل في الموجات والذبذبات الصوتية التى تنتج عن نطق الأصوات حيث تحدث اهتزازا للهواء وتنشا عن هذا الاهتزاز الذبذبات الصوتية، التى تنتقل من فم المتكلم إلى أذن السامع، ويقوم على دراسته علم الاصوات الفيزيائي (الأكوستيكي)
الأساس الثالث : ويتمثل في وصول الذبذبات الصوتية إلى أذن السامع وما يحدث ف الأذن من تاثيرات فسيولوجية وما يصاحب هذه التأثيرات من تأثيرات نفسية لدى المستمع ويقوم على دراسته علم الأصوات السمعي.
وتقدم هذه الدراسة عرضا حول هذه العلوم الثلاثة غير ان علم الأصوات النطقى يحظى عن العلمين الآخرين بتفصيل أكثر من جوانبه المختلفة من خلال قسميه الرئييين وهما : الفوناتيك والفونولوجيا.
