هذا الكتيب تعريب لتقرير عن مشروع مشترك بين ثلاثة من المدارس العامة بولاية مينسوتا الامريكية ومركز البحوث التطبيقية لتطوير التعليم وكلية التربية بجامعة مينسوتا، وقد نشر هذا التقرير في أكتوبر 1999 بمركز البحوث التطبيقية لتطوير التعليم بكلية التربية والتنمية البشرية، جامعة مينسوتا الحكومية بالولايات المتحدة الامريكية عام 1999، تحت عنوان "التنمية المهنية لتحقيق التدريس الأصيل في الدراسات الاجتماعية، دراسة تقييمية، وكانت محررة التقرير إليزابيث بالمر"
بعد قراءة هذا التقرير لأول مرة وجدتني شغوفا بترجمته ونشره للمعلمين والباحثين لكي يستفيدوا منه ومن نتائج مثل هذه التجربة في المدارس العربية في كل مكان على أرض الوطن العربي من المحيط إلى الخليج، وأتمنى أن يكون هذا الكتاب بوابة يعبر منها المعلم والباحث المهتم إلى المصادر الأصلية في هذا المجال، لكي يحقق في مدرسته ولأبنائه الطلاب التعلم الأصيل الذي يبقى في أدائهم وسلوكهم.
أن أكثر ما أعجبني في التقرير هو التأكيد على فكرة التدريس الأصيل، والتي هي جزء لا يتجزأ من التعلم الأصيل، وكذلك التقويم الأصيل الذي يؤكد على تقييم الأداء، وليس مجرد التقييم المعرفي المعتاد، وأنه خبرة ميدانية حية ويقدم ارشادات واقعية لتحقيق التعلم الأصيل، وحيث أن هذه الأفكار جديدة على مدارسنا لذا يصبح من الضروري اتاحة أكبر قدر ممكن النقاش عن هذه الأفكار وكيفية تطبيقها من خلال نماذج عملية، بقى أن نذكر بأن هذا المشروع طبق على معلمي الدراسات الاجتماعية، وهذا لا يمنع من امكانية تطبيقة على سائر المعلمين.
