يقدم هذا الكتاب موضوعات أساسية في علم نفس الجندر، مع التركيز على انعكاساته على العلاقات الاجتماعية لأفراد الجنسين وصحتهم في جانبيها الجسمي والنفسي. ويستند الكتاب إلى قدر وافر من البحوث العلمية التي أُجريت خلال مئة سنة ونيّف منذ بداية البحث في علم النفس على وجه التقريب؛ ويُلقي الضوء على الموضوعات التي اجتذبت البحث في الحقب المختلفة من هذه الفترة الزمنية، وعلى الأطر الذهنية التي وجّهت البحوث فيها، وما تضمنته من أفكار واعتقادات بشأن النساء والرجال. وقد كان يُنظر إلى الذكورة والأنوثة ـ الشخصية والمسلكية ــ على أنها مسلمات طبيعية ملازمة للجنس البيولوجي، وكان يُنظر إليها على أنها حالات متناقضة. فانصبّ البحث بدايةً على دراسة الفروق بين الجنسين ـــ في القدرات العقلية، وفي بنية الدماغ بوجه خاص ( آملين تأكيد تفوق الرجال على النساء، ولكن النتائج كانت مخيبة للآمال !). وظل منظور التناقض هو المنطلق في دراسة الأبعاد الشخصية الأخرى، وفي تحديد معايير التكيف النفسي للرجال والنساء. ولكن هذا المنظور أخذ في التبدّل في منتصف القرن الماضي تقريباً وأُعيد النظر في مسلّمة التطابق بين الجنس البيولوجي وبين الذكورة والأنوثة كمضامين نفسية ـــــ اجتماعية (تعني فيها الذكورة القوة والفعالية، وتعني فيها الأنوثة العاطفية والتواد) ، وعما إذا كان كل منهما يخص جنس دون الآخر، أم أنها خصائص إنسانية عامة بين البشر يمكن (ويستحسن) أن يتحلى بها كلا الجنسين. وطُرحت الأسئلة الرئيسية حول دور القوى الاجتماعية ـــ الثقافية في صناعة هذه القوالب الذهنية وفي ترجمتها إلى قوالب شخصية؟ وما الآثار التي تتركها على الواقع الحياتي للنساء والرجال في مختلف مراحل الحياة ومجالاتها؟ وما الحدود التي تضعها على نمو الامكانات الخاصة بالفرد الإنساني؟
