يبدأ مجلد مختارات تشيخوف هذه بقصة "أزاهير متأخرة"، وعنوانها مستوحى من الأبيات الأولى لأغنية مشهورة من كلمات آ. ن. أبوختين: ليالي الأرق، ليال فظيعة، الأحاديث مفككة، والتنهدات منهكة...
ليال تضيئها بقايا النار، والأزاهير المتأخرة في خريف ميت.
لقد ربط النقاد والقراء الأوائل اسم تورغينيف - وهو أحد أهم الأدباء الغنائيين، ومبدع النماذج الأنثوية الساحرة - باسم تشيخوف، فتشيخوف أحبّ تورغينيف وقومه تقويماً عالياً، وأعاد قراءة كتبه أكثر من مرة، وأعجب به أيما إعجاب خاصة بروايته "الآباء والبنون".
إلّا أنّه في إحدى رسائله انتقد بشدة أبطال تورغينيف: "ليزا، ويلينا أولئك لسن فتيات روسيات".
"المحبّة ترشد الإنسان كيف ينبغي أن يكون" يجب أن نتذكر دائماً هذه الكلمات الواردة في مذكرات تشيخوف، حيث نشعر في قصص تشيخوف بالحسرة على الجمال الدفين الكامن والمختبئ في الحياة، الذي يمرّ الناس بجواره لا مبالين، والذي يذوي ويفنى من دون أن يكترث به أو يحتاج إليه أحد، ومن دون أن يثقف أحداً، فعادة يشعر فقط الناس الجهلة والمحدودين عند تشيخوف بالسعادة.
وختاماً يمكن أن نضيف أنّ كل القصص التي رواها تشيخوف حقيقية، وقد لاحظ ذلك معاصرو تشيخوف، وثمة مغزى عميق من تلك النهايات التشيخوفية غير المكتملة، فعندما يترك تشيخوف البطل على مفترق الطرق متردداً وهو يفكر في تناقضات الحياة، فكأنّ تشيخوف يقول للقارئ: إنّ الحياة لا تنتهي، وهي مستمرة، وكيف ستكون في المستقبل مسألة تتعلق بالإنسان نفسه.
