عاد الضابط علي ومعه أربعة عساكر من الداخل، وحين أضيء النور الخلفي للسيارة، لمحتهم عبر الشريط الزجاجي الضيق وهم يرفعونه، ثم ساروا به محمولًا على نقالة، وملفوفًا بالعلم، حطوا به في البهو، وتناثروا هنا وهناك، إلى اليمين كان الباب المؤدي إلى حجرة قائد قوة المقابر كما بدا لي، وأمامي كانت الشواهد البيضاء تتقاطر في الظلام، وهي تغيب رويدًا حتى يلفها الليل وأشباح الأشجار والممرات الممتدة، ولما هبت الريح فجأة هاجمتني رائحة الحديقة: شجر وليمون وصبار وتلك الرائحة التي بات بإمكاني أن أميزها من الآن فصاعدًا: رائحة الموت.
