عرف عن ذي النون المصري أنه يعرف اسم الله الأعظم الذي إذا دعا به إنسان دعاءً استجاب الله له، وكانت هناك قصة طريفة جمعته بتلميذه يوسف بن الحسين الذي أراد أن يعرف اسم الله الأعظم من ذي النون بعد أن خدمه لمدة عام كامل، فرفض بعد أن أجرى له اختبارا فشل فيه، وهو أن يأتي بحقيبة مغلقة من أحد المنازل إليه، ففتحها التلميذ فوجد فأرا هرب من الحقيبة، فلما عاد إلى شيخه قال له: ائتمنتك على فأرة فخنتني أأتمنك على اسم الله الأعظم.
