يقيناً أنه لن يختلف إثنان في أن أكثر فترات التاريخ العربي إشراقاً، وأقربها إلي الخلود، وهي فترة صدر الإسلام، وأيام حكم الفاروق عمر ابن الخطاب بالذات.
ولقد أعجبت أيماً إعجاب وانا أدرس هذه الفترة، بشخصية عمر وزاد إعجابي به حين تخصصت في فرع من القانون، كان عمر فارسه الذي لا يبارى، وهو مايتصل بعلم السياسة والإدارة، وبدأت تراودني فكرة الكتابة عند منذ تاريخ متقدم، وكلما هممت بأن أبدأ المحاولة، ترددت امام هذه الشخصية المتعددة الجوانب، ذات الضوء الباهر، والتي لا تكاد تبصر العين أبعادها.
أن المحاولة التي نبدأها اليوم ليست من قبيل الدراسات التاريخية المألوفة و إنما نستهدف من وراء هذه الدراسة الرد علي الأسئلة التي سبقت، والتي يمكن إجمالها علي النحو التالي: إلي أي حد يعتبر الدين عقبة في سبيل إقامة دولة عصرية، وحلق المجتمع متحرر؟! وسوف نجد الرد العملي في حياة عمر: فلقد لحق الرسول بالرفيق الأعلي بعد أن أدى الرسالة، وبعد أن أكمل الله الدين لعباده، ثم جاء أبو بكر فقضي علي الردة، وأرسي دعائم الوحدة، وسلم الراية إلي عمر ليكمل البناء.
وهنا تبرز شخصية عمر: فهو قد آمن بالإسلام إيماناً لا يفوقه إلا إيمان أبي بكر، وذلك إذ سلنا جدلاً بأن الكمال مراتب، وهو قد فهم الإسلام نصاً وروحاً بما لا يتطرق إليه شك، ثم هو بعد ذلك أرسي أسس دولة دنيوية، وأقام نظماً إدارية، ورتب علاقات إجتماعية، في ظروف لم يشهدها رسول الله "صلي الله عليه وسلم"، ولم يعاصرها الخليفة الأول، وذلك كله في رحاب الإسلام، وعلي هدى من مبادئه وتعاليمه، فكيف نجح عمر في ذلك؟! وهل تعتبر مهمة عمر في ظروفه تلك أيسر من محاولة إقامة العلاقات الاجتماعية الجديدة علي هدي الإسلام ومبادئه؟! إنني لا أتردد في القطع بأن مهمة عمر كانت أصعب كثيراً من محاولتنا اليوم فكيف نجح عمر ، وتعثرنا؟!
