يميّز المؤلّفان جوسلين ماكلور وشارلز تايلور في كتابهما بين نمطين من العلمانية: علمانية منفتحة وهي العلمانية الليبرالية أو التعدّدية، وأخرى متشدّدة وهي العلمانية الجمهورية.
ويشكّل الموقف من المعتقدات الدينية الحدّ الفاصل بين العلمانيتين، ولكنّ الأهمّ من كلّ ذلك أنّ النمط الأوّل من العلمانية يُعدّ حصيلة مراجعات وتقييمات وإعادة نظر لمفهوم العلمانية وتاريخها وأهدافها، أمّا الثاني فظلّ مشدوداً إلى الماضي متمسّكاً به "الأصول".
مع تطوّر المجتمعات الديمقراطية الحديثة ومع العولمة أضحت التعريفات التقليدية للعلمانية، من قبيل "العلمانية هي الفصل بين الدين والدولة" أو "العلمانية هي إستبعاد الدين من الفضاء العمومي"... إلخ، تعريفات مبسطة، نتيجة الخلط بين غايات العلمانية وطرقها الإجرائية.
ومن ثَمّ فإنّ العلمانية المناسبة لهذا التطوّر ترتكز على مبدأين كبيرين، هما: معاملة المواطنين بالقدر نفسه من الإحترام، ومنحهم الحق في حرية الضمير؛ وعلى طريقتين إجرائيتين: الفصل بين الدين والدولة من ناحية، وحياد الدولة تجاه الأديان وتجاه الحركات الفكرية العلمانية من ناحية ثانية.
وقد استوجب هذا التعريف الجديد للعلمانية إعادة النظر في مفهوم الفضاء العمومي، فلم يعد المقصود خُلوّ هذا الفضاء من مظاهر التديّن بل المقصود عدم تماهي الدولة مع الدين عموماً؛ بل إن الدولة مطالبة بإحترام كل المعتقدات والإلتزامات المنسجمة مع الحياة الجماعية، وإنّ إظهار المواطنين لرموزهم الدينية في الفضاءات العامة هو فعل يندرج ضمن إطار الحرية الدينية.
