Jadis, la scène politique maronite avait été monopolisée de force par Bachir Gemayel. Rétrécie comme une peau de chagrin, elle se partage aujourd’hui entre quatre principaux camps en relation directe avec lui. Son ascension fulgurante et amorcée à un très jeune âge, sur fond de violence impitoyable et de tactiques politiques, a été consacrée par son élection à la présidence de la République en 1982 et interrompue par sa mort prématurée trois semaines plus tard.A travers son langage direct et « sec », il acquit une grande emprise aux niveaux communautaire et national. Le temps du souvenir retiendra deux aspects de son discours : le « sécessionnisme » remémorépar ses objecteurs et la « résistance » glorifiée par ses partisans, deux revers d’une même médaille. Héros pour les uns, traître pour les autres, le seul consensus autour de son action, c’est qu’elle resta inachevée. La question de savoir « que ce serait-il passé s’il était resté en vie ? », demeurera sans réponse, tout en entretenant continuellement son mythe : son projet politique n’aura pas subi le test du temps…
