الفيلسوف الذي أحدثك عنه في هذا الكتاب هو واحد من أعظم الفلاسفة أثراً في الفكر المعاصر، إنه الأمريكي ريتشارد رورتي (1931- 2007) وأخص ما تمتاز به فلسفة رورتي هو هذا التحول الذي أحدثه في الفلسفة المعاصرة بعامة والبراجماتية بخاصة. وأبسط مظاهر هذا التحول أنه ثار على التصور التقليدي للفلسفة باعتبارها تلقى الأسئلة وتلتمس لها الإجابات الخالدة، وبذلك تكون أساسية لبقية الثقافة. وانظر إليه في ثورته الفسلفية، فإذا هو ينكر أن العقل مرآة الطبيعة، وأن المعرفة دقة التمثيلات في مرآة العقل، وأن الفلسفة نظرية عامة في التمثيل المعرفي؛ وإذا هو يطرح السؤال: ما عسى أن تكون الفلسفة؟ وإذا هو يجيب: إنها محادثة تنويرية أو نوع من النقد الثقافي، وما أعرف أن أحداً قرأ الفلسفة الغربية منذ ديكارت قراءة نقدية كما قرأها رورتي، وما أعرف أن أحداً خلص الفلسفة المعاصرة الناطقة بالإنجليزية من تزمتها الضيق مثلما فعل رورتي، ولست أعرف فيلسوفاً حاول التوفيق بين الفلسفة الأوروبية من جهة والبرجماتية والتحليلية من جهة أخرى كما حاول رورتي.
