فلسفة اللغة موضوع قديم، ولكنه جاء مع مطلع القرن العشرين واحتل مكان الصدارة بين موضوعات الفلسفة، ثم زادت العناية به في النصف الثاني من هذا القرن زيادة كادت أن تحول الفلسفة برمتها إلى فلسفة للغة، إذ ينظر كثير من الفلاسفة المعاصرين إلى فلسفة اللغة باعتبارها الفرع الفلسفي الوحيد الذي يستحق الاهتمام هذه الأيام؛ ولا يكاد هؤلاء الفلاسفة يحفلون بمشكلات الميتافزيقا أو الأنطولوجيا أو القيم، وإنما يعنون العناية كلها بالمشكلات الفلسفية والمنطقية المتعلقة باللغة؛ وتزخر فلسفة اللغة بفلسفات عديدة، بيد أن إحداهما التي تجئ من سواها في الطليعة هي فلسفة الفيلسوف والمنطقى الامريكي ويلارد فان أورمان كواين، ولفلسفة كواين جوانب متعددة اهمها اللغة والمنطق والرياضيات والابستمولوجيا، ولقد اخترنا فلسفة اللغة والمنطق على أساس أنهما بمثابة حجر الزاوية في فلسفته، وترتبط بهما الجوانب الأخرى بروابط وثيقة؛ وفي محاولة لتوضيح هذن الجانبين قسمنا الدراسة إلى خمسة فصول وهي : (الفصل الأول: نقد ثنائية التحليلي- التركيبي، الفصل الثاني: النظرية التجريبية- السلوكية في تعلم اللغة وجذور الإشارة، الفصل الثالث: مشكلة المعنى، الفصل الرابع: اللاتحديد في الترجمة، الفصل الخامس: في فلسفة المنطق)، يسبقها مدخل وتلحقها خاتمة.
