ولد وليام جيمس في مدينة نيويورك في الحادي عشر من يناير عام 1842.
وهو فيلسوف أمريكي ومن رواد علم النفس الحديث.
كتب كتبا مؤثرة في علم النفس الحديث وعلم النفس التربوي, وعلم النفس الديني والتصوف, والفلسفة البراغماتية.
وكان شقيق الروائي المعروف هنري جيمس وأليس جيمس كاتب اليوميات.
يُعتبر جيمس واحدا من المفكرين الرواد في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر, ويعتبره الكثيرون أعظم الفلاسفة المؤثرين الذين أنجبتهم الولايات المتحدة, فيما اعتبره آخرون "أب علم النفس الأمريكي".
بالإضافة إلى أنه يعتبر مع "تشارلز ساندرس بيرس" و"جون ديوي", من المؤسسين الكبار للفلسفة البراغماتية.
توفي جيمس في السادس والعشرين من أغسطس عام 1910.
Book Description
مهما تختلف الآراء في الفلسفة البراجماتية قبولاً ورفضاً، فأن تلك الاراء المختلفة جميعاً، لتلتقي عند نقطة يتفق عليها القابلون و الرافضون علي حد سواء، وتلك هي أن البراجماتية إنما جاءت تعبيراً عن عصرنا العلمي من بعض وجوهه وإنه ليتعذر بل يستحيل علي المتعقب لثقافة هذا العصر أن يغمض عينيه عن هذا التيار الفكري، الذي لم يكد ينفجر ينبوعه علي يدي تشالز بيرس (1839-1914) حتي أخذت روافده تتدفق في سرعة و غزارة، فأخصبت المطارح المختلفة من دنيا الفكر و الثقافة.
وإذا كانت دراسة هذا التيار الفكري أمراً لزاماً علي المثقف العام، فهي ألزم للدارس المتخصص في الفلسفة لأن المذهب البراجماتي بين اتجاهات الفلسفة المعاصرة ليس واحداً منها و كفي، بل هو ركيزة رئيسية تلتف حول أطرافها وأركانها دراسات فرعية كثيرة.
إننا في هذا الكتاب بإزاء مرجع نفيس أصيل في ميدان الفلفسفة البراجماتية، فهذه الترجمة العربية لابد مالئة فراغاً في المكتبة الفلسفية عندنا طالما تمنينا أن يملُأ ليجد القاريء بين يديه ما يحتاج إليه من مصادر المعرفة الحديثة.
