عُرف كيركجارد أساساً رائداً للفكر الوجودي الذي ازدهر بشكل خاص في أواسط القرن الماضي، ولكن ما لا يعرفه كثيرون أن لفكر وفلسفة كيرجارد أهمية معاصرة خصوصاً وأن التطورات العلمية اللاحقة في القرن العشرين وقرننا الحالي قوضت كثيراً من صورة "العقل" و"العلم" كما فهمت في القرن التاسع عشر.
مَعين أفكار كيرجارد أكبر بكثير مما أخذه الوجوديون عنه، ولا تنحصر أهميته في جوانب متنوعة من الفكر البشري كاللاهوت (من أمثال كارل بارت، إيميل برونر، رودولف بلتمان) والسيكولوجيا (يعتبر رائداً لعلم النفس المسيحي وعلم النفس الوجودي) والأدب (عبر تأثيره في كتاب بارزين من أمثال أودن وكافكا وريلكه وبورخس وكامو وهيرمان هسه وغيرهم)، بل إن كثيراً من الفلاسفة البارزين من أمثال فتجنشتاين ودريدا، أو فلاسفة معاصرين في قرننا الحالي من أمثال باديو وججك، اهتمّوا وناقشوا ووظّفوا أفكاره، فضلاً عن تأثيره فيما بات يُعرف بــ"اللاهوت المادي" أو "اللاهوت اللاميتافيزيقي"، وهذا الكتاب ترجمة لكتاب معاصر عنه من إصدارات اوكسفورد.
مؤلف هذا الكتاب باترك غاردنر يقول في مستهل كتابه: (شبّه كيرجارد العبقرية في أكثر من مناسبة بعاصفة رعدية تأتي معاكسةً للريح، وسواء أكان يفكّر في نفسه جزئياً أم لا عندما أطلق هذه المقارنة فإنها تبدو، عند إستعادة الأحداث، مقارنةً ملائمة قدر تعلقها بمسيرته الفكرية الشخصية، فمثل ماركس ونيتشه، يبرز كيرجارد كواحدٍ من الثوار ومحطّمي الأيقونات في فكر القرن التاسع عشر، وأقصد الكتَابَ الذين ألّفوا أعمالهم في معارضة واعية لإفتراضات وتوافقات وإجماعات عصرهم السائدة، والذين لم تنلْ كفاحاتُهم الحاسمة إعترافاً واسع النطاق إلا بعد موتهم).
