خلق الله السموات بقوة وجعلها بلا عمد نراها، ومهد الرض لخلقه وجعل فيها ماءها ومرعاها، وخلق من كل زوجين وآتى كل نفس هداها، فلماذا على العبد بعد ذلك؟ وكيف السبيل إلى نجائه؟ يأتينا الجواب من الله على لسان نبيه نوح عليه السلام فيقول: "ففروا إلى الله إني لكم منه ندير مبين" فقد أمر الله عباده بالفرار إليه، واللجوء إلى جنابه، والهجرة إلى رضوانه، فالفرار يكون من أوحال المعصية إلى جنات الطاعة، واللجوؤ يكون من طغيان المخلوقين إلى عزة رب العالمين، والهجرة تكون من ضيق الدنيا وأوزارها إلى سعة رحمة الله وحسن هداه.
ولما كانت الدنيا دار غربة وانتقال لا دار وطن واستقرار، أرشد الله عباده إلى أهم ما يقطعون به منازل السفر إليه وينفقون فيه بقية أعمارهم، فأرشد من بيده الرشد إلى أن أهم شئ يقصده العبد إنما هو الهجرة إلى الله ورسوله، وهذه الهجرة هي الهجرة الحقيقية وهي الأصل، فيهاجر بقلبه من حبة غير الله إلى محبته، ومن عبودية غيره إلى عبوديته، ومن خوف غيره ورجائه والتوكل عليه إلى خوفه ورجائه والتوكل عليه، ومن دعاء غيره وسؤاله والخضوع له والذل والإستكانة له إلى دعائه وسؤاله والخضوع له والذل والإستكانة له، وهذا بعينه معنى الفرار إليه، والتوحيد المطلوب من العبد هو الفرار من الله إليه، وفي هذا الكتاب "زاد المهاجر إلى ربه" يعرض المؤلف ابن القيم كيفية الهجرة إلى الله، والوسائل التي يجب على المسلم اتخاذها ليصل إلى ربه، وحقيقة التقوى والإيمان... إلى غير ذلك من سبل الهجرة، ومعوقاتها ومحبباتها.
