لقد جعل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الجهل داء وجعل دواءه سؤال العلماء. وفي هذا الكتاب رسالة دوّن بها الإمام ابن القيم الجوزية ما يجب معرفته في أدواء القلب والروح والبدن وأدويتها. وقد جعل ذلك ضمن فصول عديدة نذكر منها: الدعاء، الآفات التي تمنع الدعاء، الاعتماد على رحمة الله وعفوه وكرمه، الغرور، الرجاء، ضرر الذنوب والمعاصي، آثار الذنوب والمعاصي، العقوبات الشرعية، العقوبات القدرية، الشرك، العدل مناف للظلم والعدوان، مفسدة القتل، دخول المعاصي على العبد، الخطرات، اللفظات، الخطوات، مفسدة اللواط، عقوبة فاحشة، الزنى، واطئ البهيمة، هل من دواء لهذا الداء العضال… أنواع المحبة، الخلة، العبد لا يترك ما يحبه ويهواه، الفعل والترك الاختياريين، المحبوب قسمان: محبوب لنفسه ومحبوب لغيره،الحب أصل كل عمل، أنواع المحبة… أثار المحبة، متعلق بعشق الصور ومفاسده العاجلة والآجلة… العشق له ثلاث مقامات، كمال اللذة والفرح والسرور ونعيم القلب، المحب لا ينكر ولا يذم، محبة الزوجات. وقد وردت هذا الكتاب مترجماً باللغة الفرنسية وذلك تعميماً للفائدة.
بين يدينا كتاب في الوعظ والإرشاد وبعض العقائد والأحكام الشرعية . كتبها المصنف ابن القيم في جواب رجل سأله سؤالا نصه : ما تقول السادة العلماء أئمة الدين رضي الله عنهم أجمعين في رجل ابتلي ببلية، وعلم أنها إن استمرت به أفسدت عليه دنياه وآخرته ؟ وقد اجتهد في دفعها عن نفسه بكل طريق، فما يزداد إلا توقدا وشدة، فما الحيلة في دفعها ؟ وما الطريق إلى كشفها ؟ فرحم الله من أعان مبتلى والله في عون العبد ما دام العبد في عون أخيه، أفتونا مأجوين رحمكم الله تعالى . فأجاب الإمام رحمه الله بهذا الكتاب.
