من الناحية النظرية تكمن الأهمية العلمية لهذا الكتاب في بلورة وتلخيص النماذج النظرية في تحليل العلاقات الإقليمية تحت عنوان كبير "الدراسات الإقليمية" كفرع في تحليل العلاقات الدولية المعاصرة، ومن ثم التأسيس النظري لهذا النوع من الدراسات وصياغة أرضية لتسهيل وتنظيم البحث بالنسبة لطلبة الماجستير والدكتوراه في كلية العلوم السياسية والعلاقات الدولية، في سياق تحديد الفائدة النظيرة، يناقش هذا الكتاب أربعة نماذج نظرية في التحليل الإقليمي للعلاقات الدولية وهي نموذج تحليل المنظمات، النموذج الوظيفي، نموذج مركبات الأمن، ونموذج الجماعات الأمنية، لكل واحد من هذه النماذج جذوره الإبستمولوجية في تراث نظرية العلاقات الدولية، لكن أعطت التطورات الأمنية وغيرها بعد الحرب الباردة قيمة للتحليل الإقليمي، خاصة فيما يتعلق بانفتاح المجتمعات على بعضها البعض في المناطق المختلفة من العالم، وحتى الدولة التي حافظت على مستوى معين من الانغلاق تأثرت بشكل متزايد بما يجري حولها في الجوار الإقليمي.
