إذا كانت النزعة النقدية تعني الفحص والنظر والاستدلال العقلي بغرض تبيان الحقيقة , فإن اشتمال النص الديني على آيات محكمات واضحة الدلالة , محدودة المعنى , محكمة عن التناقض , مصونة من الخلل و أخرى متشابهات تحمل أكثر من معنى , وتحتاج إلى " قرائن " لتحديد معناها .. كل هذا من شأنة أن يدعو إلى إمعان التفكير والبحث والتأمل , ولما كان القرآن متضمناً المحكم والمتشابه , فإن هذا يدعو صاحب كل مذهب أن يجد فيه ما يقوي مذهبه ويؤيد مقالته فحينئذ , ينظر فيه جميع أرباب المذاهب , ويجتهد في التأويل صاحب كل مذهب قصداً للحقيقة وتبياناً لها , وبهذا تتم المحافظة على باب عظيم من أبواب العبادات لا تتواصل إلى معرفة الله وتوحيدة إلا به , وهو النظر العقلي.
إن شيوخ المعتزلة اتخذوا من وجود المحكم والمتشابه في القرآن الكريم طريقاً للفحص النقدي , فأكدوا دور العقل في التمييز بين المحكمات والمتشابهات , ورتبوا المحكم والمتشابه جميعاً على أدلة العقول , وذهبوا إلى أن وجودهما في القرآن ربما يكون أقوى في المعرفة وأصلح للناس , وبهذا تؤدي المتشابهات إلى اجتهاد الناس في أن يعرفوا الحق بعقولهم استهداءً بتلك النزهة النقدية.
