المعتقدات عن الأوليات ظاهرة شعبية تضرب بجذورها فى الأعماق البعيدة للثقافة المصرية، وتسمتد العديد من أسباب الحياة لاستمراريتها وبقائها، وذلك من خلال الإبداع التلقائى الذى يصدر عن الجامعات والأفراد. ونجد انه عندما تتعرض الظاهرة للهجوم- بسبب إنتشار التعليم او الاتصال بثقافات أخرى- تتحول القصص التى تروى عن الأولياء إلى قصص يرتبط بشخصيات من التاريخ أو بأبطال الفتوحات الإسلامية.
ورغم أن موضوع الكتاب يختص بدراسة أولياء الدقهلية فقد تمت معالجة ودراسة الظاهرة فى بعض القرى القريبة فى محافظة الغربية والشرقية ودمياط. ولا تقتصر الدراسة بجزئيها على الأولياء وإنما تشمل ايضاً القديسيين فى الجزء الثانى.
