زاد سفر الملوك من كتب الإختيارات الادبيّة، وهو متّصل من حيث موضوعُه بأنواع أدبيّة ثلاثة هي: "نصيحة الملوك" و"دليل السفر" و"الحنين إلى الأوطان"، ولا ريب أنّ أهميّة الكتاب تعود إلى جمعه، في مؤلِّف واحد، هذه الأنواع الأدبيّة الثلاثة، وفيما يلي شرح لهذه الأنواع، وبخاصّة الثالث منها نظراً لكثرة مصادره وعلاقته الوثيقة بكتابنا هذا.
"نصيحة الملوك" يتضمن هذا النوع من الإختيارات الأدبيّة نصائح توجَّه للحاكم أو الوزير أو القاضي أو الكاتب، وهو شائع في كثير من الحضارات واللغات، أما "دليل السفر" يقوم هذا النوع الادبيّ على جمع نصائح طيّبة للمسافر، "الحنين إلى الأوطان" يدور هذا النوع الأدبيّ على السفر وما يثيره من مشاعر الشوق والحنين والغربة؛ والمعتاد في الكتب أو في الفصول المصنَّفة فيه أن تجمع شواهده المستقاة من القرآن الكريم أو الحديث الشريف والشعر والحكم والأمثال والعبارات المسجّعة، إلخ.
يقع كتاب زاد سفر الملوك في خمسين باباً، ويُعَدّ بذلك أشمل ما وصلنا من كتب الإختيارات التي عُنيت بموضوع السفر والحنين إلى الأوطان في الأدب العربيّ القديم.
ويبدو أنّ الثعالبي أراد أن يجمع في كتابه هذا بين المادّة الادبيّة الموروثة والنصائح العمليّة التي تجعل من كتابه دليلاً يصلح أن يُحمل في السفر.
