يعتبر كتاب (زاد سفر الملوك) لمؤلفه أبي منصور عبد الملك ابن اسماعيل الثعالبي النيسابوري (350هـ- 492هـ) من عيون التراث العربي ذلك أن موضوعه؛ في السفر ومدحه وذمه ومحاسن الأخلاق فيه. أما أهميته فتكمن في جمع ثلاثة أنواع أدبية هي "نصيحة الملوك" ودليل السفر" و"الحنين إلى الأوطان" في مؤلف واحد. ويقع الكتاب في خمسين باباً ويضم أشعاراً وأحاديث عن النبي ولطائف وظرائف وأحكام وأمثال، وهو يعد بذلك أشمل وأهم ما وصلنا من كتب الاختيارات التي عنيت بموضوع السفر والحنين إلى الأوطان في الأدب العربي القديم. وهنا تكمن أهمية عمل الثعالبي في الجمع بين المواد الموروئة والنصائح العملية، ما جعل من مؤلفه دليلاً يصلح حمله في الأسفار كافة.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب دأب المحقق هلال بن ناجي إلى اعتماد مخطوطة فريدة لـ (زاد سفر الملوك) محفوظة في مكتبة جسترتيني بدبلن في إرلندة، وتقع ضمن مجموع رقمه (5067) وقد عمل كل شرح المخطوطة في ألفاظها ومعانيها وتخريج الأبيات من مصادرها الأصلية إلى آخر ذلك من خطوات انتهجها المحقق في تخريجه لهذا الكتاب.
