المعروف أن " حزب الوفد المصرى " كان أكبر وأهم أحزاب المرحلة الليبرالية، منذ برز كتجمع وطني كبير وقاد الحركة الوطنية منذ ثورة 1919، وحتى قدر له، بفعل عوامل عديدة، أن يتعرض لأول انشقاق كبير في صفوفه، حين خرجت منه وعليه مجموعة حزب الأمة القديم وأصدقاء عدلى يكن، ليؤلفوا " حزب الأحرار الدستوريين " عام 1922 ، وليبقى سعد زغلول وأنصاره متمسكين باسم الوفد وقد تحول إلى " حزب الوفد المصري " وليخوض الانتخابات التي جرت بموجب دستور 1923 على هذا الأساس . غير أن حزب الوفد في ظل تغيير قيادته، واختلاف تحالفاته، وربما تغير بنيته الاجتماعية، بعد نحو عقد من وفاة سعد زغلول، تعرض بفعل عوامل ومنافسات داخلية لانشقاق ثانٍ خرجت به مجموعة أحمد ماهر والنقراشي عن الوفد لتعلن تشكيل حزب جديد يحمل اسم سعد، وهو " حزب الهيئة السعدية " عام 1938 . غير أن هذا الانشقاق لم يضعف حزب الوفد تماماً، حتى أنه لم يلبث أن تعرض للانشقاق ثالث عام 1942 ، كان بطله مكرم عبيد الذي شكل مع مؤيديه حزباً جديداً يحمل اسم الوفد وهو " حزب الكتلة الوفدية المستقلة " وهو الحزب الذي يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسته. لقد حظي حزب الوفد المصري بدراسات عديدة ، سواء في مصر أو خارجها، بحكم اهمية دوره، كما حظي حزبا الأحرار والدستوريين والهيئة السعدية بدراستين علميتين شاملتين، وهذه الدراسة هي أول دراسة علمية شاملة تعد وتنشر عن تاريخ حزب الكتلة الوفدية منذ نشأته عام 1942 وحتى نهاية تاريخه عام 1953 .
