طبع لأول مرة عام (1283هــ/ 1866م)، وينقل فيه العلامة فارس الشدياق صورة تفصيلية عن الحضارة الأوروبية من خلال معايشته لها نحو ربع قرن من الزمان، بالإضافة إلى نقل ما كتب في أشهر المؤلفات الإنجليزية والفرنسية عن المعالم، والأعلام، والأحداث التي مرت بها الثقافة الغربية منذ عصر النهضة إلى منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، ومن ثم يُعدّ بحق مصدراً لا غنى عنه للتعرف على الهيكل الإجتماعي للمجتمع الأوروبي، والحياة اليومية والعادات والتقاليد السائدة، وأهم المعارف والعلوم، والحالة الدينية، في أوروبا خلال القرن التاسع عشر.
تحلى فيه مؤلفه بالموضوعية في النقد، وإنتهاج المنحى العلمي في الحكم على الوقائع والواقعات التي عايشها وشاهدها في رحلته.
يهدف صاحبه من تأليفه إلى تبصير العالم العربي والإسلامي بصور التمدن الحديث في أوروبا، ليلحق بركب المدنية الحديثة؛ حتى لا تتعمق الفجوة، ويتسع الخرق على الراقع.
