كل من يحصى الأدب للأمم والشعوب، لا يستطيع أن يغفل قصة "صائد الغزلان" التى ظهرت فى ختام النصف الأول فى القرن الماضى، فهى معلم من معالم الأدب القصصى الأمريكى، وشخصية "ناتى بامبو" تضاف إلى الشخصيات العالمية التى مكن لها الأدب القصصى والدرامى فى النفوس على مر العصور، وهى إلى هذا كله ملتقى الشعر والنثر الفنى فى الوصف الطبيعى الأخاذ، ولا يوجد فتى فى أمريكا لا يقرأ هذه القصة، ولقد مثلت على الشاشة البيضاء، ولا تزال حية مقروءة إلى اليوم فى غير لغتها الأولى ذلك لأنها قد ترجمت إلى كثير من اللغات.
ولا مشاحة فى أن بقاء هذه القصة حية إلى اليوم، إنما يدل على أن موضوعها الأصيل لا يزال حياً فى النفوس، فإن النزوع إلى التخفيف من أسباب التكلف والتصنع والتمويه لم يفارق الوجدان الإنسانى، والجانب الأخلاقى الذى تبرزه عن طريق الوعظ لا يمكن أن يبلى أو تبلى الحاجة إليه، فإذا أضفنا هذه الخصال إلى الخصائص الفنية التى تزخر بها فى التصوير والسرد وتسلسل الأحداث صح عندنا أن نقلها إلى العربية ضرورة لا يقتضيها مجرد العلم بما عند الآخرين من روائع فحسب، بل يدفع إليها أيضاً الجانب الإنسانى والأخلاقى والفنى الذى تلتقى فيه المتعة بالمنفعة.
