يتناول هذا الكتاب التحدّيات التي تثيرها تطبيقات حقل الهندسة الوراثية في المجالات القانونيّة والطبيّة والإجتماعيّة، مثل إستنساخ الأنسجة والأعضاء البشريّة، وإستخدام الــ DNA قرينةً قانونيةً في الجرائم المختلفة، فيعرض بإختصار الجانب العلمي للموضوع وبشكلٍ مُبسَط، بعيداً عن التعقيد، ويستقصي في الكتاب والسنّة والفقه الإسلامي الأدلةَ المتعلقة بمسائل البحث ويناقشها، مستخلصاً الحكم الشرعي لكل مسألة منها.
ومن القضايا التي يتناولها الكتاب بإستفاضة ويبين حكم الشارع فيها، إستخدام البصمة الوراثية في إثبات النّسب أو نفيه، وجرائم الحدود والتعزيزات، وإستخدامها كذلك في العقود كعقود التأمين والتوظيف والزواج.
كما يتناول الكتاب موضوع الإستنساخ، كإستنساخ الأنسجة والأعضاء، والتدخل العلاجي والتحسيني في الجينات، ومشروعية البحث العلمي في مجال الجينات وتطبيقاته على البشر.
وقد تضمنت خطة البحث دراسة الجينات البشرية من الناحية الشرعية، وقد قسمت الدراسة إلى ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول تضمن تعريفاً مبسطاً على الجينات البشرية من الناحية الطبية، تم فيه تعريف معظم ما تناولته الدراسة بدراسة شرعية، من تركيب الجينات البشرية، وماهية الخريطة والبصمة الوراثية المميزة لكلّ إنسان، وعلاقتهما بالصفات والأمراض، ثُمّ تحدث عن أنواع التدخل المخبري في الجينات، وما توصل إليه الطب في ذلك، سواء على صعيد شفاء الأمراض أم على صعيد تحسين الجنس البشري، وتناول المبحث الأخير منه الإستنساخ البشري لكل أنواعه.
وحوى الفصل الثاني مبحثين، تحدث الأول منهما عن مشروعية إثبات النسب ونفيه عن طريق البصمة الوراثية، وتناول المبحث الثاني دور البصمة الوراثية في إثبات جرائم الحدود والتعزيزات، ودورها في الإثبات في المجال المدني؛ وانقسم الفصل الثالث إلى خمسة مباحث، تحدث عن مشروعية التداوي والأعمال الطبية، وشروط ممارسة العمل الطبي، وأحكام المساس بجسد الآدمي، وشرعية التشخيص الجيني وعلاقته بعقد الزواج وعقد التوظيف والتأمين، علاقة وجود صيغ صبغية خاصة عند بعض البشر، بإيجاد أحكام خاصة بهم تختلف عن باقي البشر.
